Understanding Body Shape Index (BSI)

Body Shape Index (BSI), or A Body Shape Index (ABSI), is a metric for assessing health risk based on body shape. It was developed to be a more effective predictor of mortality risk than the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI). BSI takes into account height, weight, and, most importantly, waist circumference.

The BSI Formula

The formula for calculating BSI is:

BSI = Waist Circumference / (BMI^(2/3) * Height^(1/2))

Where all measurements are in metric units (meters and kilograms).

Why Waist Circumference Matters

The key innovation of BSI is its inclusion of waist circumference. A larger waist circumference is a strong indicator of high levels of visceral fat—the fat stored around the internal organs. Visceral fat is more metabolically active and dangerous than subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin) and is strongly linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other health issues. By prioritizing waist circumference, BSI aims to capture the risk associated with abdominal obesity, which BMI on its own cannot do.

Interpreting Your BSI

A higher BSI value indicates a higher proportion of weight is concentrated around the abdomen, which correlates with a higher health risk. This calculator provides a general risk category based on your BSI and gender.
